To the lawyers: Isn’t there something inherently illegal or unethical about using services like these? Or do they get around it by having lawyers on staff?
Third-party funding of lawsuits used to be tortious conduct, under the doctrines of champerty and maintenance. However, at least in certain states (such as Florida), these doctrines have been superseded and are no longer viable as causes of action.
