“Jury: Ranchers did not violate Mexicans’ rights”

“A federal jury on Tuesday afternoon ruled that an Arizona rancher did not violate the civil rights of 16 Mexican nationals he detained at gunpoint after they had snuck illegally into the United States in 2004, but the jury awarded $78,000 in actual and punitive damages to six of the illegal immigrants on claims of assault and infliction of emotional distress.” [Jerry Seper/Washington Times, earlier]

  • $78K, $60K was punitive… But what about all the damage to his property?

  • I don’t understand how a jury can find the illegals 25% at fault but STILL award punitive damages. That’s just insane.

  • Also, please note that Mr. Barnett’s attorney was David Hardy, who has a pretty darn good blog (and a great documentary) dedicated to the Second Amendment: “Of Arms and the Law.” He discusses the case a little here.

  • Ah, the new American way: “We know you weren’t really at fault, but let’s just give them a few of your bucks to make us all feel better about those poor people.”
