No. What you smell is “hotel tax protection”.
Jim’s right. NYC doesn’t want to lose out on the taxes it collects when customers stay at hotels. True, even these sublet and other arrangements are supposed to charge taxes, but probably many don’t, and even when they do, the price charged for the rooms is far lower, which means lower tax revenue.
I’m sure the hotel industry is all in favor of this action, but the politicians can paint it anyway they want. We’re not fooled.
