“The woman who claims faulty walking directions on Google Maps caused her to be hit by a car is trying to salvage her case with the novel argument that Google is liable for negligent publication because it provided her with ‘individual advice.'” [Matthew Heller, OnPoint News; Google brief, PDF, at OnPoint News; earlier here and here]

I just use the voices in my head as my personal adviser.

I thinking of filing a defamation case against Google Maps because Street View shows me in a compromising position through my family room window.

Just remember, Bob, it’s time to see a shrink when you:
1) Argue with voices in your head, and
2) Loose.
I might argue with them if they didn’t mumble.

Google can simply amend their program so that the plaintiff ends up in Outer Mongolia instead of court on the day of the trial. Problem solved.
Well, it seems to work for Charlie Sheen :p

The other day there was a story posted here about why Swiss skiers and sledders seldom sue, with the question asked why they don’t. This current story provides a good contrast to that. I think the difference is that the Swiss appear to still believe in personal responsibility. In America, on the other hand, there are large numbers of people who have outsourced their sense of responsibility to everyone around them – whose attitude is “I am not responsible for my actions; everyone else around me is responsible for looking out for my safety”. It’s pretty obvious which attitude will lead to a flood of lawsuits.
