by Walter Olson on May 16, 2011

Opelousas, Louisiana: “The attorney who filed the original desegregation lawsuit against the St. Landry Parish School Board in 1965 is seeking nearly $10 million in legal fees for his work on the case over the past 46 years.” [AP/Daily World, Baton Rouge Advocate]

$700 an hour seems excessive, even taking the multiplier into account, but the hours average out to little more than 300 hours per year, which doesn’t sound excessive for a case of that magnitude and complexity.

Still a pretty good payday if he gets it – I bet he wants to retire. I know I would.

$700 per hour is far in excess of the hourly fees charged by the biggest firms in either Baton Rouge or New Orleans. Is there any evidence that this atty. is especially skilled or is board certified? I would also argue that he should be foreclosed from collecting any fees incurred prior to, say, 2005, based on laches and/or the applicable statute of limitations for bringing contract-based actions
