Bloomberg: no food donations to homeless shelters

“[Glenn] Richter has been collecting food from places like the Ohav Zedek synagogue and bringing it to homeless shelters for more than 20 years, but recently his donation, including a ‘cholent‘ or carrot stew, was turned away because the Bloomberg administration wants to monitor the salt, fat and fiber eaten by the homeless. … Richter said that over the years he’s delivered more than two tons of food to the homeless.” The NYC mayor says he’s not planning to reconsider the recently adopted policy. [CBS-NY] Earlier here (Connecticut), here (N.J.: “retail food establishment”), here, etc.

  • Yes, if you’re homeless, what you’re really concerned about is whether you’re eating lean meat.

(Of course, actual evidence-based science — see Gary Taubes, Dr. Michael Eades — suggests that we all should be eating plenty of meat, no bread, and making sure our meat is fatty and delicious*.)

*(Okay, so “delicious” isn’t part of the science, but I’d bet Synagogue Whatever provides much better tasting food than the government.)

  • We want nutritionally balanced corpses in NYC, not those with too much salt, cholesterol, or flab in them. Why this is, I’m not exactly sure. It’s not like they’ll provide a photo-op.

Will free gym memberships be the next mayoral mandate?

  • So hand it out on the street and tell Mayor Nanny to kiss off.

  • Will free gym memberships be the next mayoral mandate?
Not free, that would be absurd and clearly government overreach.

The gym memberships will still be mandatory, of course, but you will to pay for your own.

  • They want to monitor the food intake by the homeless, to ensure that they eat healthy. I wonder if they would ever think about monitoring the sexual practices of the homeless, in order to make sure that they were safe.

    Probably not.

  • I am sure the delicious Jewish ‘cholent‘ (carrot stew) can’t possibly be healthy for homeless folk, instead of their usual Pink Slime entree.

  • This “pink slime” epithet sounds like just another slander by the likes of PETA, not to be taken seriously.

If I were running one of those charities, I would continue passing out food, claim freedom of religion, and dare them to come up with a jury that would convict me.

  • It should be forbidden by a constitutional amendment to give out cholent without also giving out apples afterwards t take care of heart burn.

  • Bloomberg, they are freakin homeless! How are you going to monitor their food intake?
There are convicted criminals in prisons and jails all around New York state, and the prison officials can’t monitor all the drugs smuggled into a prison. If you can’t monitor what prisoners are able to put into their bodies, how are you going to monitor what homeless people are putting into their bodies?

  • bloomberg will tag them with a bar code.
