Query on site redesign answered

At least a dozen of our readers were generous enough to reply to our query of last Friday about how to replace relative with absolute links. We’ve now solved the problem to our satisfaction. Readers’ suggestions fell into three main categories:

1) Search-and-replace. Get the source code for the old page, search on

../archives/
and replace with
https://www.overlawyered.com/archives/
wherever found. We think this method would work nicely and would have used it had #3 below not proved even simpler.

2) Get a Movable Type plugin that is described as replacing relative with absolute URLs:

http://mt-plugins.org/archives/entry/resolveurls.php

We’re not wholly confident that this plugin would leave everything else absolutely unaffected other than the problem we wanted to solve, but again, we found that it wasn’t necessary.

3) Use a different way of opening and editing the old page. Reader Ed Macauley of Atlanta advised us to open the old page in IE, save it to file, then open the saved file in a text editor named Ultra Edit. We didn’t have that editor but we opened the file in Jarte and presto: all relative links had in fact been converted to absolute links ready to cut and paste into the new MT page. End of problem.

Again, thanks for our readers’ kind willingness to help with these issues. It really makes running the site a lot easier.
