Continuing the discussion of safety and liability (see May 13, Mar. 7) reader Robert Ayers writes:
Let me add some history to the informed comments of your readers.
Automobiles circa 1950 did have the laminated glass — with the plastic interlayer — throughout.
The major auto companies converted during the 50s (this date is from memory), one by one. My father worked for Monsanto Chemical Company at the time. Monsanto made the interlayer for the laminated windows and campaigned (including using ads targetting car-buyers) to try to keep the business. But the new tempered windows had many advantages, as your readers noted, and quickly took over.
P.S.: When I was in high-school at a track meet, I saw a laminated windshield stop an errant thrown discus. Impressive.
