“At least we should enforce the law”

Not a terribly useful meme, thinks Tyler Cowen (Jun. 5).

  • Without trying at to be rude, Mr. Cowen is simply clueless.

The AREN’T enforcing th law (along the southern border) in any meaningful at all. Illegals openly mock our anemic efforts.

The only reason the Indians in Hyderabad can’t “swarm” in by the “untold millions” is that MEXICO has stringent enforcment and keeps them out of MEXICO.

That is, MEXICO enforces it’s borders, and we depend on them to keep everyone else out. We do practically nothing.

“It means that current levels of law enforcement are in fact keeping out most of the people who would like to enter the country.”

No, large oceans and a seriously hypocritical Mexico (which draconian measures to secure it’s own borders but threatens to SUE us if we do ANYTHING more than we are doing now to nforce our own) keep most of the rest of the world out.

He makes an analogy about a companies actions being delayed until it has stopped ALL employee theft. To make that analogy accurate to the current situation, the company in question has brought employee theft down to tolerable levels in all the buildings it owns… except the building where the supply closet is; the employees in THAT building aren’t checked or monitored AT ALL, and they are well- and publicly-known to be robbing the company blind. But hey, we’re keeping MOST of the employees from robbing the comany, right?!?!?!?

  • I’m sorry but Tyler Cowens post is simply dreck. Oceans and geographic conditions prevent most people from Hyderabad from getting to the US.

Are we supposed to believe these are part of the tools ‘used by law enforcement personnel’ to enforce border security? That prospect is asinine and it makes my head hurt to think that you would link to it an affirmative manner.

His idea that there is an opportunity cost to enforcement is obviously correct. You use your resources where you can. But his statements: “Many murders and robberies are committed each year. No one says “let us first enforce the law” before proceeding with, say, tax reform and other beneficial improvements.” is a complete non-sequitor. One has nothing to do with the other. Enforcing border security before allowing more massive immigation to our country is not in any way related to what he’s talking about.

I feel dumber for having been exposed to such a vapid point of view.
