NJ Turnpike sues crash victims

After a press inquiry, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority abruptly changed its mind about suing the Ryan and Christmas families, who between them lost four family members in an August 2006 crash. (Kieran Crowley, “NJ Adds Insult to Injury”, New York Post, Dec. 17).

  • Jeez, Louise, let’s hope it was just a “clerical error.” Just sue the trucking company for crying out loud!

  • I am confused as to why removing these poor folks from the complaint would prevent the NJTA from bringing claims against the truck driver as the article states.

  • This is the same state which banned the death penalty in order to coddle cold-blooded murderers.

  • “It should not have happened,” said NJTA spokesman Joe Orlando. “It was a clerical error. We would like to apologize to the family.”
That’s some clerical error. Just think what they would do to you if they really wanted to get your goat.

  • That is something we expect to read in “The Onion’!

Pretty sad when supposedly professional make such a “mistake”!

  • So, what exactly happened here? First they sued the victims. Then, when this was pointed out to them, they dismissed the case rather than dismissing only the complaints against those victims? And they dismissed the case with prejudice?

(I’m assuming from the comment that this means they can’t collect from the trucking company.)

What kind of incompetents work in that office? Or is this the result of some weird local procedural rules?
