had a case in Detroit where the judge was elected because her name was a ‘sound-alike’ to a name that had political recognition. She was, however, brilliant. Story was that before law school she had taught 7th grade.
She had an uncanny ability to motivate reasonable behavior in her courtroom. In a case where a public official had been ignoring a subpeona for deposition, and we were in for a motion to compel, she denied our motion — but told my local counsel if he’d get her a motion to consolidate our case with 5 or 6 others in her court on the same construction project, she’d reconsider, thelling counsel for the public agency ” That way the busy and important Dr. S**** will only have to BOTHER himself with this court’s affairs once.
