The New Jersey Supreme Court will take up the appeal of a case where a Brick, N.J. man hurt in a motorcycle crash was allowed to proceed with a suit against the Toms River restaurant that had served him. [Asbury Park Press via NLJRA, earlier]

Well there goes personal responsibility, right out the window.
Is this the plot for the second season of Jersey Shore? (Go to a bar, get drunk, do something stupid, get hurt, sue the bar, watch lawyers in cheap suits make speeches and hit on girls wearing little — sounds like all the right elements for a hit).
I don’t know how it is in much of the country, but in South Carolina, at least, it’s already established that there is liability for people you get drunk, be it by serving them at your bar, or serving them at a party you’ve thrown. That’s why it’s recommended, for large parties (weddings being a common example), to get a catering service to handle the alcohol, because then the bulk of the liability moves to them.
I forget the name of this doctrine, but… it’s what I’ve been taught, here (undergrad, pre-law courses, for what those are worth, so the reality could be WAY off *eyeroll*)
