Local governments are often open to “amending” speeding tickets, but in a manner that reflects their financial self-interest — and also pays dividends for the prosperity of the local bar. [Mike Sykuta, TotM]

Its not quite that bad in Wisconsin. You usually don’t need a lawyer to negotiate the municipal speeding ticket. But, for instance, a local municipal will ding you for a ticket of $88 and 4 points (hey, I really was guilty of the infraction). But, if you talk to their attorney, he will amend the ticket to a non moving violation, but it will cost you $120 bucks. And if you look at the regional district court website, they tell you what amount of every ticket is used to support the court.
Had this happen to me, once in West Virginia, for a U-Turn violation. The judge (also the mayor of the town) took me into the back room and decided that it was really a problem associated with my turn signal… But the fine was the same…
Oh, and there were no lawyers involved – why drive up costs unnecessarily if the town isn’t going to get anything out of it?…
