I was a unionized graduate student in NY (Communications Workers of America). I learned that I was in a union after my advisor went to increase my abysmal “union-negotiated” stipend out of his own pocket and discovered that it wasn’t possible under the union contract. I tried to get out but they demanded a lump sum buyout that I couldn’t afford. So they parasitized 1% of my salary until I graduated, which is what unionization of graduate students is intended to do.
