I have read statements from FATCA defenders that the costs would start to even out if the EU, not necessarily tax-averse, accepted our implicit invitation to enact an interlocking FATCA of their own, creating a worldwide tax-collectors’ utopia. So far, I gather they have not shown much interest. Even if they wanted to start taxing expatriates on foreign income, they probably are wary of double-crosses by protectionists and other special interests in the US Congress.
